The latest ransomware named WannaCry has caused havok over the past week, the only way to prevent it is by updating your Operating System to the latest security patches from Microsoft.  Generally the only way to get your data back once infected is to pull a valid backup of the infected files.   If you don’t run backups, you might be out of luck until a method to decrypt the files is released, if it ever is.
